A fugitive in New Jersey was apprehended on Friday, nearly a week after escaping detention, according to authorities.
The New Jersey Department of Corrections reported that Edward Berbon, 54, was brought into custody without incident shortly before 2:30 p.m. after investigators with a fugitive unit located him in Camden.
Commissioner Victoria L. Kuhn issued a written statement expressing her gratitude for the Special Investigation Division’s hard work and commitment in locating and apprehending this individual. The New Jersey Department of Correction’s Fugitive Unit is among the finest at what they do, and we appreciate their efforts to resolve this case quickly.
Berbon had been participating in a residential community release program, but on September 23, after completing a work shift in Mount Laurel, he neglected to return to his halfway house in Camden County. The purpose of the work release program, according to officials, is to assist inmates who are nearing the end of their sentence in transitioning back into society.
Authorities considered Berbon a fugitive, but there was no evidence that he posed a threat to the community, they said.
Berbon had been incarcerated since 2005 for the attempted assassination of his parents, and his release was scheduled for February 12, 2024.
Authorities said he attacked his parents in their residence in Hamilton Township, Mercer County, in July 2004, mere hours after his release from prison. It is still unknown what prompted those attacks, but his parents survived.
