During the subsequent twenty years, much of his time was devoted to residing in correctional facilities. This included a three-year period at the Ohio Penitentiary, following his relocation to the Starr Commonwealth For Boys reform school at nine. Coe stated that Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, with whom he had spent time in prison, encouraged him to start composing songs.
Coe began a music career in Nashville after completing another jail stint in 1967, living in a hearse parked in front of the Ryman Auditorium and performing on the street. Shelby Singleton, owner of the indie record company Plantation Records, noticed him and inked a contract with him. Coe is a former member of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club’s Louisville, Kentucky chapter.
