Daniil Olegovich Trifonov was born to Oleg Trifonov, a composer, and Marina Trifonova, a music teacher, on March 5, 1991, in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. At seven, Trifonov had his first solo recital after starting piano lessons at age five. He began taking classes from Tatiana Zelikman at the Moscow Gnessin School of Music in 2000. Trifonov attended the Cleveland Institute of Music with Sergei Babayan from 2009 to 2015.
Along with taking home the First Prize at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in 2011, he also took home the Grand Prix and First Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2010 and the International Chopin Piano Competition prize in 2010. Deutsche Grammophon signed Trifonov as a recording artist in 2013. His debut album on the label, a live recording of his Carnegie Hall solo debut, received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Classical Instrumental Solo.
Later, in 2018, he was awarded a Grammy for a CD featuring all Franz Liszt’s transcendental études on piano. Seven of his albums are ranked on the Billboard Top Classical Albums list. His albums have been included in foreign record chart rankings.
