Debate “about two very different plans for our country’s future.”
In the middle of their ongoing fight from coast to coast, Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is running ads to support his upcoming discussion with Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
During an interview with Sean Hannity of Fox News in June, Newsom said that he would face DeSantis.
“Let’s just do it. Just tell me the date and place. We’ll do it,” DeSantis said in response to Newsom’s challenge on Wednesday. The DeSantis team is using the discussion as a launch in a big way.
“This isn’t about California vs. Florida. That debate is over because people have been voting with their feet by moving to Florida for years,” the campaign told followers in talking points. “This is about two very different ideas about where our country is going in the future.”
“Ron DeSantis and Gavin Newsom are having a debate to show the choice that American voters will have to make next year,” the talking points were updated later to say. “The left wants America to go down the same path as California. Ron DeSantis wants to rekindle the American Dream, bring back common sense, and make sure our best days are still ahead.”
The campaign also put out ads to promote the discussion and push people to “choose their fighter.”
The ad, which looks like a video game, asks, “Who do you support?”
In a recent letter to Hannity, who was asked to be the presenter, Newsom said that the event would be advertised as a “Red vs. Blue debate” about how participation at the state level affects people.
The governor of California also suggested that the argument happen in Nevada, Georgia, or North Carolina.
DeSantis recently went to Newsom’s state and said that San Francisco “collapsed because of leftist policies.”
“People were going to the bathroom in the street. “We saw people using heroin and smoking crack,” DeSantis said. “The city is no longer lively. It has really fallen apart because of leftist policies, which have made people leave the area. They don’t go after crooks like they do in most of the country, and it’s sad to see what’s happened.”
Over the past few months, the two have gone back and forth on different topics. For example, Newsom put up pro-abortion ads in Florida, while DeSantis talked about crime and drug use on the streets of California cities.
Both sides have accepted the challenge, but a date for the argument has not yet been set.
