On Saturday, Chelsea announced that they have acquired Robert Sánchez from Brighton on a seven-year contract.
ESPN reported on Thursday that Chelsea had agreed to pay approximately £25 million ($31.7 million) for the 25-year-old player.
Chelsea has been searching for a new goalkeeper since Edouard Mendy’s June transfer to Al Ahli of the Saudi Pro League.
Last season, Chelsea finished 12th in the Premier League, their worst finish since 1994. Under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea hopes to turn its fortunes around.
Chelsea’s co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart said in a statement, “Robert has repeatedly proven himself in the Premier League and has earned international recognition.”
We are eager to see him collaborate with Mauricio and his coaching staff during the upcoming season.
Sanchez joined Brighton’s academy in 2013 and has made 87 Premier League appearances for the south-coast club. However, he fell out of favor at the conclusion of the previous season, as Jason Steele started 15 of Brighton’s last 16 league games.
Sanchez, who is dexterous with his feet and has a wide passing repertoire, has earned two appearances for Spain. He will compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga for the goalkeeper position at Stamford Bridge.
Roberto De Zerbi, the coach of Brighton, said, “Robert is a good guy and a really good player, but sometimes being a coach requires making difficult and painful decisions for the team.”
I wish him success in the future.
