According to ESPN, Manchester United has made a second offer for Mason Mount, but Chelsea is holding out for a price closer to their valuation.
United have returned with a second offer worth close to £50 million ($64 million) after a previous offer of £40 million ($51 million) was rejected. The valuation of Chelsea is £70 million ($89 million), and negotiations between the two clubs are ongoing.
Erik ten Hag is interested in signing the England international to reinforce his midfield and relieve some of the pressure on Christian Eriksen, who made over 40 appearances after joining on a free transfer from Brentford last season.
Mount’s contract at Stamford Bridge has one year remaining, and negotiations for a new agreement have broken down. According to ESPN’s sources, the 24-year-old Chelsea academy product is willing to move to Old Trafford.
According to reports, United believe £50 million is a reasonable sum that represents Mount’s ability to leave Chelsea for nothing in a year’s time.
Other clubs’ interest in Mount has waned since Liverpool signed Alexis MacAllister from Brighton and Arsenal and Bayern Munich switched their focus to other targets.
According to ESPN, United are confident that they can complete a deal for Mount in time for him to join Ten Hag’s squad for the preseason tour of the United States, which begins on July 20 in New York.
However, club sources have told ESPN that United are hesitant to go above £70 million, and that the transfer is contingent on Chelsea dropping their expectations.
Chelsea has already decreased the values of Mateo Kovacic and Kai Havertz this summer in order to enable deals to Manchester City and Arsenal, respectively.
