According to sources, Chelsea agreed to sell striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Marseille on a free transfer.
During initial talks between the two clubs earlier this week, Chelsea requested a minimal price in exchange for Aubameyang’s services, with the Blues also determined to offload the entirety of the striker’s substantial salaries.
Marseille, though, was unwilling to pay a sum for the 34-year-old, forcing Chelsea to choose Aubameyang’s future.
Chelsea had hoped that Aubameyang would agree to a move to Saudi Arabia, where a transfer price and complete wage package were on offer, the 34-year-old turned down the offer since he has always wanted to stay in Europe.
Aubameyang has been awarded a free transfer after stating that he would be willing to see out the remaining year of his contract at Chelsea if he was not allowed to join Marseille this summer.
Chelsea, aware that they were unlikely to recuperate a significant amount for Aubameyang, have prioritized dumping the striker’s whole wage packet, which would exceed the sort of transfer fees on offer in Europe over the remaining 12 months of his contract.
Chelsea’s big squad clear-out is nearing conclusion; therefore, the agreement signals yet another significant departure.
Mauricio Pochettino left Romelu Lukaku, Hakim Ziyech, and Callum Hudson-Odoi out of his pre-season squad to continue talks about summer sales.
Chelsea has previously let go of Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, Kalidou Koulibaly, Christian Pulisic, Edouard Mendy, Rube Loftus-Cheek, and Ethan Ampadu, as well as Cesar Azpilicueta, Baba Rahman, Tiemoue Bakayoko, and now Aubameyang.
