The Spanish international made his home debut for Chelsea on Sunday when Chelsea played a 2-2 draw with Tottenham.
Marc Cucurella assisted on his home debut for Chelsea after Kalidou Koulibaly scored following his corner kick. The Spaniard was at a center of a controversial referee decision after videos from the match showed Tottenham defender Christian Romero pulling him to the ground by his hair before the Corner kick that resulted in Harry Kane’s equalizer.
He was the first choice left back for Chelsea in the London derby ahead of Ben Chilwell.
Explaining why he picked Marc Cucurella over Ben Chilwell Thomas Tuchel said: “He is a very intelligent player, he does good choices, is very safe on the ball and playing through the lines, very calm.
‘I have a feeling that he has a bit more feeling for the rhythm and intensity of matches than Ben at the moment ‘We keep Ben Chilwell for substitutions because he is a high-speed runner, an intense runner. ‘But after his long injury, I think he lacks a little bit of rhythm and feeling for the matches. That’s why we go for Cucu today.”
What did Marc Cucurella say about the incident with Christian Romero?
The 24-year-old said when asked about Christian Romero pulling his hair to the ground in the London derby: “For me it was clear and the video was clear, sometimes referees make good decisions and sometimes they don’t, but this is not my problem, I am focused on the game.
“Maybe in the next games we need to work hard to not concede in the last minute. I saw in the stadium they were checking for a red card and to me, it was very clear, but this is football. In this game, it was an error, in another game the referee would take a good decision.
“I have no problem with him [Romero], it was only one action in the game, but maybe it was an important action because it’s possible to change the final result.”
The Spanish international also revealed that he can play in three positions on the left side. But hinted that his favorite is as a left-back.
Marc Cucurella in his first two games for Chelsea has played into a different position. In his debut for Chelsea, he was deployed as a left center back replacing Kalidou Koulibaly in the second half. In the game against Tottenham, he played a left-wing back.
“The three positions on the left side are good for me. My best position is left-back in a back four because I played all my career in the academies in this position.
“I have more movement and stay more comfortable, but if the gaffer puts me in another position I run as well!
“I’m very happy to be here. It’s a lot of money and a big responsibility for me, but Todd and the gaffer were so interested in me coming here. I need to work hard, adapt to the team and have this will to win and play well for the club.”
The 24-year-old also added that he will not cut his trademark hair after the incident with Christian Romero during the London derby.
Replying when a reporter asked if he will cut his hair following the Sunday incident, he said: “No. Never. This is my style.”
