If you choose a platinum wedding band, it shows that you have the means of leading a luxurious life because the choice of wedding bands has a direct relation to your lifestyle and financial status. For centuries platinum has been the metal of the elites because history says that way back in 1780, the French King  Louis the XVI had declared the metal fit for kings only.  Platinum is the most expensive jewelry metal, and you must take the responsibility of maintaining it well.

Although all jewelry metals are precious metals, the rarity of Platinum makes it most expensive, say the experts at Mens Wedding Rings.us.  You will not see many people wearing platinum jewelry. However, it has become more affordable for many because of the economic development that has increased the number of wealthy people worldwide. Today there are many more billionaires than what it used to be a decade ago.

Platinum bands need some special care to protect your investment and retain precious looks.  Unlike other jewelry metals, platinum does not fade or become dull quickly, nor will its color fade, but it will develop a thin coating on the surface over the years that people know as patina.

The general caring methods of platinum are the same as that of other jewelry metals, like avoiding its exposure to harmful and abrasive chemicals to prevent any scratching or denting.   If the band design has gemstones like diamonds or other costly stones, the need for care is much more. Be gentle with the platinum bands and remove them when you do some heavy work to prevent denting and scratching. For gemstone bands, inspection by a jeweler twice a year will ensure that the gemstone setting is undisturbed. During resizing, ensure that the jewelry uses platinum only and not white metal to dress up the band after completing the work, or else it can lead to black marks.

The patina effect

Platinum does not fade or dull, but after some years, it develops a thin coating on the surface that slightly darkens the metal than what it was when purchased, but the color does not change.  The patina effect is due to the light falling on the platinum surface that develops minor and almost invisible dents or pits that diffuses the light that falls on the band and creates an illusion of a darker surface.

Some people consider this natural change a special characteristic of platinum that increases its attraction and beauty by lending a special characteristic to the metal.

Getting a bright finish

To get a bright finish of long-used platinum bands, you can either choose buffing or rhodium plating.

Buffing – Buffing is the process of gently rubbing the surface of the ring with a buffing wheel that rotates at high speed but gently rubs against the surface to effectively remove the tiny spots of denting and scratching and restore the shiny white surface appearance.

Rhodium plating – Coating the platinum band with a layer of rhodium, another white metal, can create a mirror-like sheen on platinum.

All options are open to creating the most desired looks of your platinum wedding band.
