Despite the Supreme Court’s ruling on Thursday that a California gun control legislation was unconstitutional, Democratic lawmakers in the state failed to pass a new law to replace it, rendering the state’s concealed carry laws null and void.
Early Thursday morning, the California Assembly rejected the bill by a single vote. In light of the vote’s failure, California Attorney General Rob Bonta expressed regret that concealed carry permits are so easily obtained in the state.
Bonta predicted that after the Supreme Court’s decision to eliminate the “just cause” requirement, an unprecedented number of people would seek asylum, but that insufficient safeguards would be in place to protect them.
Before the vote, he continued, “If this law does not pass, those who haven’t undergone a full safety review can receive a hidden weapon and carry it into [sensitive] areas.”
