Instead of going to the NRA convention in person on Friday, Governor Greg Abbott was planning on spending the day in Uvalde.
Beto O’Rourke, a Democratic candidate for governor of Texas, announced on Thursday that he would participate in a rally on Friday in Houston “against gun violence.” The rally is scheduled to take place outside of the NRA gathering.

On a page devoted to the event, it was said that “this atrocity and the too many others before it are fully predictable, direct repercussions of the choices made by Greg Abbott and the majority of the Texas legislature.” There will be further tragedies on the scale of those that occurred in Uvaldes and El Paso, as well as Sutherland Springs and Santa Fe, because of the power that the gun lobby has in state politics.
O’Rourke’s opponent, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who is running against him, decided not to attend the convention in person and will instead hold a meeting with his supporters in Uvalde, Texas, on Friday. Abbott is running against O’Rourke. During the convention, the audience was shown prerecorded statements that had been prepared in advance.
Beto O’Rourke tweeted, “Action is the response to despair” as he was calling on people to participate in a demonstration against the “NRA and the politicians they purchase.”
