‘Nobody’s hands are clean,’ Obama added.
Former President Barack Obama stated on Pod Save America that the United States must confess that “all of us are complicit” in the Israel-Hamas conflict, adding that “nobody’s hands are clean.”
Obama said that if the United States was to intervene in the Middle East war, citizens would have to accept many points of view that he described as “contradictory” on the surface.
“What Hamas did was heinous, and there is no excuse for it.” And what is also true is that the occupation, and what is happening to Palestinians, is intolerable, and what is also true is that there is a history of the Jewish people that may be dismissed unless your grandparents, or your great-great-grandparents, or your uncle or your aunt tell you stories about the madness of antisemitism, and what is true is that there are people dying right now who have nothing to do with what Hamas did,” he said, adding that
The former president stated that it was critical to recognize the “whole truth,” rather than just one side.
He also condemned attempts to debate the situation via TikTok “activism” and social media, claiming that individuals were attempting to “maintain moral innocence” by speaking only one side of the truth.
“That isn’t going to solve the problem.” So, if you want to fix the situation, you must accept the complete truth. “And then you have to admit that nobody’s hands are clean, that we’re all complicit to some extent,” he continued.
Obama also stated that he questioned himself about what he could have done better during his term in order to “move this forward.”
“That’s the conversation we should be having, looking forward rather than back.” That cannot happen if we remain confined to our fury. “I’d rather see you out there talking to people, including those with whom you disagree,” he remarked.
On Saturday, the “Pod Save America” podcast broadcast a short snippet from the conversation, stating that the former president was discussing “violence in Gaza.”
“If you truly want to change this, you have to figure out how to talk to someone on the other side, listen to them, understand what they’re saying, and not dismiss it.” Because, in this case, you can’t save that child without their assistance,” he concluded.
During an address at his foundation on Thursday, he claimed the conflict between Israel and Hamas constituted a “moral reckoning” for all of us.
