At least six people have died this week as a result of flooding on Indonesia’s holiday island of Bali, which has blocked off major roads in the capital, causing interruptions at busy travel destinations.
The head of the island’s search and rescue team, Mr. I Nyoman Sidakarya, noted that the persistent downpour between the evening of Sept 9 and the morning of Sept 10 brought down two buildings in Bali’s capital, Denpasar, killing four people.
He added that access to the international airport of the island near Denpasar was restricted, as only trucks could use the roads.
Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency also said that two more people were killed and 85 have been moved from the region of Jembrana.
Mr. I Nyoman Sidakarya said about 200 rescuers were dispatched. The agency chief, Suharyanto, told reporters that the flooding has continued to hit Bali as of Wednesday.
The disaster mitigation agency also noted that heavy rain also led to flooding in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara, where four people have been killed.
