Arizona Man Sentenced for Setting Fire to Grand Canyon National Park Cabin Where His Ex-Girlfriend Resided

Authorities reported that the fire damaged more than $40,000.

A guy from Arizona was given a sentence of almost two years in jail last week for setting fire to a cabin where his ex-girlfriend was staying in Grand Canyon National Park.

The Department of Justice said on Tuesday that Dahntay Dunbar, a 21-year-old resident of Flagstaff, was taken into custody in May after breaking into her locked cabin and starting a fire inside.

According to federal prosecutors, Dunbar located a bottle of clear vodka and set it on a bed before setting fire to his ex-girlfriend’s clothes. At the moment, she was not in the cabin.

According to a DOJ statement, “the bed started to burn, and Dunbar left the cabin.” “The fire caused scorching, burn damage, and smoke damage to the walls, ceiling, and other parts of the cabin.”

According to court records, a passerby saw the fire and put out the majority of the flames before firemen got on the site.

The cabin was owned by the vacation business Xanterra. Authorities said that the fire damaged property worth over $40,000.

A little while later, park officers apprehended Dunbar. He entered a guilty plea to house arson on July 8.

According to court filings, Dunbar got into a fight with the anonymous woman a few days before to the fire and punched through one of the windows.

He received a jail term, a $20,146.13 restitution order, and five years of supervised release upon his release from prison.

Edward Berbon was apprehended after he walked away from a halfway house after escaping from custody in New Jersey.
