A classmate twice stabbed a college student from Arizona in the same classroom.
In what appeared to be a random attack on September 19, a student at Arizona State University is accused of stabbing her friend twice in a Glendale classroom.
About the attack on student Mara Daffron, Kaci Lenise-Charlie Sloan, 19, is charged by Maricopa County officials with first-degree attempted murder, aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct with a weapon.
On a GoFundMe page, Daffron’s neighbours shared that she had been “stabbed several times, but luckily, she is making great progress and is on the mend.”
“We want the Daffron family to have the support of our whole community at this trying time. The GoFundMe page “Support Mara Daffron’s Recovery Journey” says, “These funds will go towards anything the family may need.” “We know Mara will emerge stronger than ever from this unimaginable attack.”
According to FOX 10 Phoenix, Matthew McCormick, a student who saw the incident take place in their classroom, acted quickly to put an end to the alleged stabbing, perhaps sparing Daffron’s life.
“In that moment I didn’t really have a thought going through my head I just knew that I felt compelled to do something,” McCormick told the news organization.
A professor was among the thirteen witnesses who described the attack to authorities. According to a probable cause document that Fox News Digital was able to get, the stabbing happened “without any provocation or any words spoken.”
In their report, police supported McCormick’s statement by noting that one of the witnesses “was able to disarm the defendant by pulling the knife away from the defendant’s right hand and threw it [sic] away from them.” At that moment, a second witness “kicked the knife to the back of the classroom.”
“Another witness described the defendant [sic] was sitting in the classroom at a desk and suddenly got up and ran at the victim as the victim entered the classroom and stabbed her multiple times,” said the affidavit.
According to a handwritten letter that investigators discovered inside her backpack, Sloan was “about to commit” an act, but the letter “did not specifically state what she was referring to.”
In an interview with investigators following the alleged incident, Sloan also reportedly stated that she wanted to “hurt somebody” in class that day. She decided to attack Daffron because she was “an easier target” than the other individual, whom she called “a veteran.”
As soon as the police came, they took Daffron to a local hospital so that she could get her wounds treated.
“ASU Police are still looking into the stabbing of a student on campus on September 19. Kaci Sloan was taken into custody and placed under arrest right away on charges of disorderly conduct, aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, interference with an educational institution, and first-degree attempted murder. “She is being held on a $250,000 cash-only bond,” a representative for ASU said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “What transpired saddens ASU and the ASU West Valley community. ASU West Valley is a tight-knit community of instructors, staff, and students. Counselling support is provided to everyone.”
In Maricopa County, Sloan has a preliminary hearing set on Monday.
