Dershowitz said the straw that broke the camel’s back was last month’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The renowned attorney Alan Dershowitz announced he is leaving the Democratic Party, he said, because of a number of “anti-Jewish” MPs within its ranks, along with the most recent DNC, where Vice President Kamala Harris was nominated to be the party’s presidential candidate.
In a radio interview with host Zev Brenner for “Talkline with Zev Brenner,” Dershowitz identified the DNC as standing in support of anti-Israel speakers and protesters who picketed outside.
“It was the most anti-Jewish, anti-Israel, anti-Zionist convention I’ve encountered,” he added. “The Democratic National Convention left me repulsed. Completely repulsed.”
“I’m not a Democrat anymore. “I am an Independent,” he added, saying that he may not declare his presidential preference until after November 1. “I’m interested in seeing how they handle Iran. I want to help influence the current administration to support Israel.”
The retired Harvard Law professor said it had taken him time to quit the party and that his exit happened over a period of time.
“Alot of things pushed me in that direction,” he said. Dershowitz cited as a pivotal moment in Harris’s decision his being unable to preside over a joint session of Congress during an address by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Democrats boycotted Netanyahu’s speech by failing to attend and hear him.
He said the conference in Chicago last month finally was the straw that broke his back.
He named as anti-Israel the Reverend Al Sharpton, already accused of antisemitism, and Representatives Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders.
More to the point, there were anti-Israel protesters outside the event calling for the end of Israel.
“That’s not my kind of party,” Dershowitz said.
The October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas has driven a large wedge into the Democratic Party, with some members refusing to condemn the terrorist organization and even pointing fingers of blame at Netanyahu for Israel’s military action in response.
But many Democrats, while calling for caution on Israel and seeking a truce, have held Hamas and Hezbollah-an Iranian-backed terror organization located in Lebanon, in Israel’s north-to less standards.
