On Monday, the Premier League club announced that it has signed Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from AC Milan on a five-year contract through 2028.
According to reports, the transfer fee is €70 million ($76.28 million) with add-ons. No financial details were disclosed.
Tonali said in a statement, “First and foremost, I want to thank Newcastle United because they are providing me with a tremendous opportunity for my career.” “I want to repay the confidence on the field by giving my all, as I have always done.”
Tonali will become the most expensive Italian player in history, and the transfer will be a record for Milan, surpassing the €68 million Real Madrid paid for Brazilian midfielder Kaka in 2009.
Once considered Andrea Pirlo’s heir, 23-year-old Tonali led Milan to their first Serie A championship in 11 years in 2021-22 and was instrumental in their run to the Champions League semifinals the previous season.
Tonali, a versatile midfielder, played more games for Milan than any other player last season, totaling nearly 4,000 minutes across all competitions.
Even though Milan coach Stefano Pioli experimented with various formations last season, Tonali was a regular in central midfield as the team finished in the top four and qualified for next season’s elite European competition.
Tonali has 14 senior caps for Italy but was left off the squad that placed third in the UEFA Nations League.
Under manager Eddie Howe, Newcastle qualified for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years by finishing in the top four.
Tonali will be their second summer signing, following the signing of 18-year-old Gambia forward Yankuba Minteh from Danish club Odense Bolkklub.
