Convicted thief Anna Sorokin, inspiration behind the popular Netflix series “Inventing Anna,” was released from ICE custody in 2022. She became the object of a tirade by “The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg against her own network, ABC, over reports that convicted felon and con artist Anna “Delvey” Sorokin will be performing on “Dancing With the Stars” this season while wearing an ankle bracelet.
“They let this woman to go do this, and it makes me think of the families who had family members detained by ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] who have gone to court to get their father, brother, or mother back. Should I now assume that there’s a reason? Is ICE using a two-tiered structure here?” Goldberg said.
Sorokin was released from federal custody in October 2022 after serving 17 months in prison and has been out on house arrest since then. The entirety of the successful Netflix comedy “Inventing Anna” was written around the life of Sorokin-a girl who posed to be worth 60 million euros while living a life full of luxury in New York.
Goldberg replied, “I don’t know why she gets to stay,” after co-host Joy Behar referred to Sorokin as “pretty.” “What in tarnation, man? I’m listening to people complain about what’s going on at the border and about all these people that shouldn’t be here. How does this work?”
The Soviet Union-born Sorokin concocted a scheme to dupe several financial institutions and some of Manhattan’s most moneyed and connected residents into thinking she had vast wealth overseas. In 2019, four counts of theft of services, three counts of grand larceny, and one act of attempted grand larceny were proved against her.
“We have to assist the network, and I understand that,” Goldberg said of ABC. She then placed her palm to her chin and suggested the move was a significant slap “in the face of many people who have been trying to come back to this country.”
ABC News did not return the comment immediately after Fox News Digital reached out.
None of the other co-hosts was too thrilled at the very idea of Sorokin’s participation in the show either.
“When you consider that she committed another crime and, I’m not sure what the consequences are, she cheated a lot of people, went to jail for two years, and then had to do an additional 18 months for exceeding her welcome and visa. Co-host Sunny Hostin said earlier in the conversation, “A federal bejewelled ankle monitor, a bejewelled ankle monitor, and a spot on a television show.”
