Early Life
Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born to William Mebarak Chadid and Nidia Ripoll Torrado on February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia. She was born under the zodiac sign of Aquarius, of Columbian nationality and white descent. She is the only child of her parents. Shakira spent much of her early childhood years in Barranquilla, a city on Colombia’s northern Caribbean coast. At age four, she wrote her first poem, “La rosa de cristal” (‘The Crystal Rose’). Shakirah has eight half-siblings through his father. While she was growing up, she was enchanted to watch her father write stories on a typewriter. She received her typewriter at age seven.
Shakira wrote a song titled “Tus gafas oscuras,” which her father inspired following the death of his half-brother in a motorcycle accident. When Shakira was four years old, her father took her to a nearby Middle Eastern restaurant, where she experienced her first encounter with the doumbek. This Middle Eastern musical instrument frequently accompanies belly dancing. She concluded that she wanted to be a performer after he began dancing at the table. Shakira’s classmates called her “belly dancer girl” at school because she showed them her new dance moves every Friday. She enjoyed performing for the teachers and students at her school. Her vibrato was too strong, and she could not join the school chorus in second grade. Her music conductor told her that she sounded like a goat. In school, Shakira struggled with ADHD and was frequently dismissed for being overly active.
Between 10 and 13, Shakira sang at festivals in Barranquilla. That’s where she met Monica Ariza, a local theater producer who wanted to help her get ahead in her career. Ariza talked Sony Colombia’s boss, Ciro Vargas, into letting Shakira sing in the hotel lobby while they were flying from Barranquilla to Bogota. Shakirah impressed Vargas, but not Sony’s song or artist director. Vargas made plans for Sony Colombia executives to come to an audition she had in Bogota. He wanted her performance to catch them off, guard. She performed three songs, which was sufficient to secure her a three-record deal.
