Getting a dental crown restores your bite and returns your winning smile. But perhaps you’ve got issues with yours currently, and you’re not sure of the signs.

Sounds like you? Don’t worry, you’ve come to the right place. Here are the five signs your dental crown is loose.

1. Pain and Swelling Around the Tooth

The most obvious sign you have a loose dental crown is if there’s pain or swelling around the affected area. Note, that these indicate that there’s an infection spreading, likely caused by a dislodged or loose crown.

If you notice this, then Google “dentists near me” so a professional can alleviate the discomfort.

2. Receding Gum Line

Another sign you have a dental crown loose is if your gums have receded. Because of this, bacteria can get trapped around the dental crown, making it harder to eliminate. It could also mean that the crown hasn’t properly been installed so book an appointment with your dentist for an examination.

3. Older Than 10 Years

You may need to search for “dentist near me” if you’ve worn the dental crown for over 10 years. Note, that this will depend on the material you have. For instance, most crowns are made of stainless steel, ceramic, and resin.

4. Signs of Wear and Tear

You must book a dentist appointment if there are visible signs of wear and tear. A major cause is if you chew or grind on your food which could potentially damage the crown. Plus, it will gradually lose its aesthetic appeal.

5. Feels Wobbly

Dental crowns are like permanent teeth, so they shouldn’t wobble. This is because the dentist will have bonded them to your tooth. To check, try and wiggle the dental crown and if it moves, then you must book an appointment with your dentist.

Main Causes of Loose Dental Crowns

It’s important to familiarize yourself with the causes of loose dental crowns, so you know how to prevent them.

You may damage the dental crown if you regularly eat sticky foods like chewing gum or soft candy. If you do this, it will compromise the dental cement so the crown becomes loose.

Another issue is if you have tooth decay. Crowns are immune because they’re durable, but the tooth underneath isn’t so any rot will loosen the crown. If this is the case, the dentist will either save the dental crown or fill any cavities before installing a new one.

Check Your Dental Crown Today

Hopefully, after reading this article, you now know the telltale signs of a loose dental crown.

Check whether there’s any pain around your tooth, if the crown wobbles, and whether the gum line has receded. You should also book an appointment with your dentist if you’ve had the crown for over 10 years and there are signs of wear. Good luck!
