Adolph Robert Thornton Jr. was born in Chicago, Illinois,on July 27, 1950, to Adolph and Diane Thornton. He was born under the zodiac sign Leo is of American nationality, and is of black ethnicity. Robert had four siblings. Ida Mae, his grandmother, raised him primarily. During his childhood, his parents were addicted to crack cocaine, forcing him to live with his grandmother. Robert attended and graduated from Hamilton. According to Robert, many of his contemporaries in the South Memphis neighborhood where he grew up were raised by their grandparents due to problems their parents had. After battling lung cancer, his grandmother died on March 5, 2008.

Career

Paper Route Campaign, Young Dolph’s first mixtape, came out in 2008 with the help of his friends. He devoted himself to rap after realizing its popularity in his community. Two years later, he formally established his independent record label, Paper Route Empire 2010. That same year, he released Welcome to Dolph World, his first mainstream mixtape, with production from DJ Scream and features from 8Ball & MJG, 2 Chainz, and house artists Tim Gates and Money Makkin Murda. With the 2011 release of the mixtapes High-Class Street Music and High-Class Street Music 2, Young Dolph moved away from a style reminiscent of Memphis rappers Three 6 Mafia and 8Ball & MJG. A Time 2 Kill and Blue Magic, two mixtapes by Young Dolph, were released in 2012 on April 12 and November 14, respectively. Young Dolph put out a mixtape with Young Scooter and Big Bank Black on March 15, 2013, called East Atlanta Memphis. This came after several collaborations and a personal relationship with Atlanta trap rapper Gucci Mane. He released Trappin’ Out a Mansion, the third record in the High-Class Street Music series, on May 13, 2013.

Young Dolph released South Memphis Kingpin on October 15, 2013, and “South Memphis” quickly became a hit. Dolph released “Cross Country Trappin” on April 15, 2014. The fourth episode of Young Dolph’s High-Class Street Music series, “American Gangster,” was released on July 8, 2014. This mixtape had contributions from 2 Chainz, Gucci Mane,Fiend, Trinidad James, Trae tha Truth,Shy Glizzy, Problem, and Cap 1. The song “Preach” also gained national attention and was featured. On the famous song “Cut It” by O.T. Genasis, to which Dolph contributed, O.T. Genasis reached a peak position of #35 on the Billboard Hot 100 list. King of Memphis was Young Dolph’s first studio album with a full-length tracklist. It came out in 2016. The album reached its highest position on the US Rap chart at number five, the US R&B/Hip-Hop chart at nine, and the Billboard 200 chart at forty-nine. When his album Bulletproof came out in 2017, it went straight to #14 on the US Rap chart, #19 on the US R&B/Hip-Hop chart, and #36 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Personal Life and Death

Young Dolph had a partner named Mia Jaye. The couple had two children, Tre Tre Thornton and Aria Ella Thornton. Even though they were not married, they lived together more than married couples. Young Dolph was shot three times outside on September 26, 2017, at a Hollywood, Los Angeles, retail store. He was later listed in critical condition at the hospital, but doctors claimed he would survive. He spent two weeks at the hospital before he recovered from the gunshot. Following his gunshot, Corey McClendon, Yo Gotti’s friend, was named as the prime suspect but later declared innocent. After recovering from his gun wounds, young Dolph calls himself Bulletproof.

He was again fatally shot and killed in Memphis on November 17, 2021, while visiting Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies. It was revealed that two men in a white two-door Mercedes-Benz gunned him down. His autopsy revealed that he had 22 gunshot wounds from bullet entries and exits. It stated that some of the bullets hit his forehead and back. On Tuesday, November 30, 2021, Young Dolph was laid to rest. At the First Baptist Church on Broad Street, there was a service. The family’s group of black SUVs were led to the cemetery across from Young Dolph’s old high school by security and Memphis police.
