Chelsea was on a summer signing spree under new ownership last summer. The Blues spend over £280 in the summer transfer window. The blues splashed the cash on defenders following the departure of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.
They signed Wesley Fofana from Leicester City, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Marc Cucurella to strengthen their defense and also help replace Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger.
One player who was on the radar of Chelsea was Croatian and RB Leipzig degender Josko Gvardiol. Chelsea was close to landing the youngster but the move did not materialize. The 20-year-old was part of the Croatia Team that finished third in the just-ended World Cup. His performance for Croatian has earned him applause from many pundits.
Chelsea now may face tight competition in their pursuit of the RB Leipzig youngster as the team has started monitoring him following his impressive World Cup showing. The likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Barcelona have all set their eyes on Josko Gvardiol over a possible transfer.
RB Leipzig has placed a £100 price tag on the Croatian international.
However, former Chelsea and French defender William Gallas claim Chelsea should have signed Josko Gvardiol instead of Wesley Fofana and Kalidou Koulibaly. Claiming Wesley Fofana and Kalidou Koulibaly were panic buys.
What did William Gallas say?
Gallas said via Genting Casino: “Chelsea was linked with Gvardiol last summer and they should have got him then, Instead, they got Fofana and Koulibaly.
“They already have Thiago Silva and Azpi [Cesar Azpilicueta] too so it may be difficult to get Gvardiol now. At the start of the season, it would have been a good move but I don’t know if it would be now.
“Chelsea panicked in the summer. They saw some players and put a lot of money towards them when for me, they did not meet their value.
“Some chairmen spend too much money when they have no idea what they are doing.”
Meanwhile, William Gallas has advised Chelsea to sign Cristiano Ronaldo on a short deal.
Cristiano Ronaldo was released by Manchester United last month after an interview with Piers Morgan. The Portuguese Superstar is a free agent and is currently training in Spain at Real Madrid.
He added: “Chelsea have to buy a striker.
“They have to find the right striker who fits the system.
“It’s not only me who sees that problem. Chelsea are in a position where they are not scoring many goals, and Ronaldo could do that.
“It would have been difficult for him at the World Cup on the bench, so he needs time to think to avoid a similar situation to what happened at Manchester United.
“If he goes to Chelsea, it should only be until the end of the season but I think he could do a good job there.”
