The medical conditions concerning sexual problems come with social taboos more than any other non-communicable or even communicable diseases. Not many countries make sure that it is compulsory for all children, reaching a certain age, to receive age-appropriate sex education. Let us understand how sex and sexual problems remain taboo to date.

Why talking about sexual health is important?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recognizes sexual health as a fundamental characteristic of the overall health and well-being of individuals, couples, and families. It also affects the social and economic development of communities and countries. Thus, it becomes necessary to highlight the importance of seeking professional assistance to eradicate any factor affecting one’s sexual wellness.

Why sex is taboo?

The very fact that sex is a very private and intimate act between two people, many cultures do not allow open discussions or depictions of such instances. Hence the existence of societal and cultural norms and values showcases that sex should never be talked about in front of anybody.

Maintaining or keeping privacy about one’s sex life is definitely a way of maintaining decency or respect for each other as individuals. But it is also equally important to educate each other and communicate whenever it is necessary, in order to avoid getting into severe problems. Unfortunately, there has been no definite differentiation or awareness made to the public, as to exactly what all are fine to talk about openly, so as to have a better living.

Hence, with time it got established that talking about sex is a vicious thing to do. For this, even schools and parents fail to impart proper sex education and adults don’t openly talk about their sexual health or preferences.

Societal culture, in many oriental countries, prefers to keep sex as just a mere medium for married people to have babies, and sex before their marriage is just a disgrace to society. It might not be wrong to say that such stringency regarding sex and marriage was initiated in the early days to not let the women be exploited for sex and later on left with the child alone. It was a way to impart societal responsibilities diligently. Or it might also have been a measure to keep the population on a good record.

However, with time, even though the dynamics of the population of such countries changed, the outlook for sex and marriage did not change much. Rather, it got stretched to extremity, and sex got considered to be cheap and vulgar if done without the intention of marriage.

Sexually transmitted diseases and sexual medical conditions that hinder one to have an overall healthy living, of course, top the chart when it comes to the problems arising due to lack of sex education.

Why Sexual Problems are Taboo?

#1 Lack of Sex Education

Sex being taboo, sexual problems are no exceptions. Even today there are nations that fail to understand that sexuality is a natural part of human life and should be taught as such. Hence the social taboos lingering around sex and all the concerns related to it.

Sexual health issues are no exception in this regard and people being affected by such conditions are compelled to suffer in silence in fear of being judged. Yet not many parents open up to their kids and have a candid conversation in order to guide them at the right time.

#2 Lack of Necessary Facilities

The dearth of necessary medical facilities for sexual health is a big reason why not many people are comfortable doing something about their sexual problems.

Not all hospitals or healthcare organizations have dedicated departments for sexual wellness. Hence, many patients who are hesitant to visit the chamber of sexologists publicly, due to the stigma associated with it; fail to get the ED treatment for their problems.

The shame or inhibitions force people to go for unauthorized and untrained medical practitioners and do not always correspond to modern medicines, and also lead to misdiagnosis and wrong treatments.

Is there any solution around the corner?

It is very interesting to observe how technology, social media, and sex-positive doctors along with fem-tech and sex-tech start-ups are working towards removing the effects of decades of misinformation and creating significant awareness about sexual problems. Together, they trying to encourage people to talk and consult about their sexual health from the comfort of their homes.

Whether it is via diagnosing sexual medical problems like erectile dysfunction (ED), or addressing performance anxiety, the impact of technology or digital solutions for sexual wellness is expanding rapidly and receiving a much more favorable response from all corners. While the rural areas are yet to come into the loop, the urban population is fast picking such digitized solutions.

Speaking of sexual problems like ED, there are many popular medications available online, which patients can avail, by simply uploading a valid prescription. Vidalista tablets are one such medicine that is often prescribed to fight off ED symptoms in men. But it should be consumed under the supervision of a healthcare practitioner only.
