Career and rise to fame
George developed a strong desire for pure cinema, and he made 16mm nonstory, noncharacter visual tone poems and cinema verité, including Loot at Life, 1:42.08, The Emperor, Filmmaker, Anyone Lived in a Pretty (How) Town, and 6-18-67. He developed a deep passion for camerawork and editing and regarded himself as a filmmaker rather than a director.
He decided to take more lessons on film production and re-enrolled at the University of Southern California as a graduate student in film production. Lucas directed a short film, Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4ED while working as a teaching instructor. His short film won first prize at the 1967–68 National Student Film Festival. He won a Warner Bros. scholarship to observe and work on the production of a movie of his choice, and he chose Finian’s Rainbow. He also worked as a camera operator on the classic Rolling Stones concert film Gimme Shelter.
George relocated to San Francisco after graduating from USC, where he co-founded American Zoetrope with Francis Ford Coppola.
