Who Is Rodney Alcala?

Born Rodrigo Jacques Alcala-Buquor on August 23, 1943, the notorious American serial killer was the third of four children born to a Mexican American couple. Growing up, he spent his early years in Mexico before he and his family relocated to Los Angeles when he was 8. At the age of 17, Rodney enlisted in the Army in 1961 to become a paratrooper and served as a clerk. However, he was discharged after a nervous breakdown and allegations of sexual misconduct. 1968 saw him graduate with a fine arts degree from the University of California, L.A.

Shortly after graduating, he made his first attack and fled to New York University — where he attended a class with Roman Polanski under the alias “John Berger.” In 1980, Rodney was sentenced to death for 12-year-old Robin Samsoe’s murder. However, the judgment was reversed in 1984. He was sentenced to death again in 1986, only for that judgment to be overturned in 2003. Early Life and Education

Rodney Alcala was born Rodrigo Jacques Alcala-Buquor on August 23, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas, United States. He was the third of four children born to Raul Alcala Buquor and Anna Maria Gutierrez. According to his birthday, he was born under the Virgo astrological sign. His father abandoned them three years later after he moved the family to Mexico. In 1954, his mother relocated the family to suburban Los Angeles.

As an academically gifted student, Rodney attended many private schools during his youth before graduating from Montebello High School. In 1961, at age 17, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a clerk. During his service, Rodney’s commanding officer noted him as manipulative, vindictive, and insubordinate. He was also disciplined on many occasions for assaulting young females.

In 1964, he was diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder and was estimated to have an IQ of 135 by a military psychiatrist. He was subsequently discharged from the army. Following the army, Rodney enrolled and graduated from UCLA School of Fine Arts. He also attended the New York University (NYU) under the new name Roman Polanski.

Rodney Alcala Death

Crimes, Arrest, Trials, and Conviction

Rodney Alcala made his first strike on September 25, 1968, by luring an 8-year-old girl, Tali Shapiro, into his car, then took her to his Los Angeles home and brutally beat and sexually assaulted her. However, the kid survived after a passing motorist named Donald Haines alerted the police after witnessing Alcala lure Tali Shapiro. Shapiro was in a coma for 32 days and spent months in recovery.

He fled to California and enrolled at NYU, using the name “John Berger” to evade the arrest warrant stemming from the Shapiro assault. Under his new name, Rodney graduated from NYU and worked as a counsellor at a girls’ arts and drama camp in New Hampshire. He also landed a job at Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, where he worked in an office with serial killer Richard Cottingham. However, neither of them claimed to know the other. Ultimately, the police tracked him down after two girls from the camp recognized Alcala’s face on an FBI Most Wanted poster.

Following his arrest, he played guilty to child molestation and registered as a sex offender. Rodney was convicted of seven murders committed throughout the 1970s in California and New York. In 1980, he was sentenced to death in Orange County in connection with the 1979 murder of 12-year-old Robin Samsoe. His sentence was reversed four years later, and he was granted a new trial. In 19866, Rodney was again sentenced to death and was also once again overturned in 2003. However, in 2010, Rodney was ultimately sentenced to death for the third time in Orange County. The same year, he was convicted on five counts of first-degree murder for the killing of Samsoe, plus four others.

In 2012, Rodney was convicted of two more murders, the killing of Ellen Jane Hover in 1977 and the 1971 killing of Cornelia Crilley. According to reports, the killing happened before Rodney moved to New Hampshire.

Appearance on The Dating Game

In September 1978, Rodney participated as Bachelor No. 1 on The Dating Game, a television show where men and women conducted blind interviews with potential matches. He was a convicted child molester at the time, but the show did not conduct a background check, which has since become more thorough due to the establishment of a national crime database and other improvements. Rodney was hailed as “a successful photographer whose career took off when his father found him in the darkroom at 13, fully developed.” When Cheryl Bradshaw, his prospective date, asked what kind of dinner he’d be, he said, “I’m called ‘The Banana,’ and I look perfect.” Peeling me.”
