The family of Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman (N.Y.) was able to safely return to New York early Sunday morning. Goldman and his family were in Israel over the weekend when Hamas terrorists attacked the country without warning and fired rockets at them. Goldman and his family had to hide in a hotel.
A spokeswoman for Goldman Sachs said in a statement that the congressman was in Israel with his wife and three youngest children for a family Bar Mitzvah when Hamas started attacking early Saturday morning. The attacks happened on Shabbat and Simchat Torah, two of the holiest Jewish holidays.
Goldman and his family took cover from rocket fire in the hallway inside their hotel until early Sunday morning, when they were able to leave safely for New York.
Kanter said Goldman feels “grateful for the assistance of the State Department and Israeli authorities, and he hopes all Americans can come together to support Israel’s right to defend herself from terrorism and war crimes.”
The Israeli National Rescue Service says that at least 1,100 people have been killed in the terrorist attack so far, and thousands more have been hurt.
Israel is still being attacked by Hamas, which fires rockets into the air and has fighters fight on the ground. In response to the attacks, Israel has launched retaliation strikes against Gaza.
Sunday morning, Goldman asked Congress to restock and expand Iron Dome, Israel’s air missile defense system that can stop short-range rockets before they can hit the ground.
He wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “I hope Republicans can clean up their House so we can pass emergency laws to help Israel defend herself.” Last week, eight Republicans joined all Democrats to remove Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., from his position as speaker of the House. The congressman was talking about the future race for speaker of the House.
It wasn’t just the representative from New York who was in Israel over the weekend, when Hamas began its biggest attack on the country in decades. While they were in Israel, Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and his team also had to stay put.
His office says that Booker and his staff cut their trip short and left Israel safely on Sunday.
On Friday, the senator from New Jersey came in Israel. He had planned to stay for a few days to meet with people before speaking at a N7 summit in Tel Aviv on Tuesday about the Abraham Accords and regional economic integration.
Author Maya Krishna-Rogers, who works for Senator Booker, said in a statement, “Senator Booker and his staff were in Jerusalem when Hamas attacked Israel on Saturday and stayed put for their safety.” “We are grateful that Senator Booker and our colleagues were able to safely depart Israel earlier today.”
