There are so many responsibilities that come with moving home. Whether this is your first move or you have done this many times before, it can be stressful enough that you forget some important steps. When you have the keys and the move is complete, you may feel at a loss as to where you should start. Here is a quick list of some of the most important steps you should take either on your move-in day or soon after.

Check the Whole Property

Before you start arranging furniture and unpacking boxes, take the earliest opportunity to go over your new home from top to bottom. Check every cupboard and corner so that you can raise any concerns as soon as you spot them.

Unpack Your Essentials

Before you move out of your old home, you should have packed some essential items for the first few nights after the move. These will include a change of clothes, some snacks, toothbrushes, and toothpaste, as well as anything else you think will make it more comfortable for the initial days. Keep these accessible when moving so that you can unpack them first.

Clean Thoroughly

It’s optimistic to think that every seller will have done a deep clean of the property before handing over the keys. While they may have given it a quick wipe down or a cursory sweep, they were also in the process of moving and probably didn’t have time to get into all the nooks and crannies. If possible, try to thoroughly clean your new home before unpacking your belongings, or check out some cleaning companies in Miami.

Set Up Utilities

You will need to get in touch with your utility providers for essentials like electricity, gas, and internet. Do this as soon as possible to save yourself the frustration of waiting too long once you’ve already moved in.

Insure Your Home

Home insurance is vital for keeping your new home safe. Most mortgage lenders require homebuyers to insure their homes, so it’s important to do this promptly. Shop around for good home insurance that protects your property from unfortunate events such as flooding, fire, or burglary. You will feel more secure knowing that you have insurance to make it easier if the worst should happen. You should also consider insuring the belongings that you take outside of your home in case of damage or theft.

Change the Locks

In a perfect world, changing the locks of a new home wouldn’t be necessary. However, you never know who had copies of your keys before you bought the place, so it’s safest to change the locks to avoid previous owners or any other unwelcome visitors from intruding upon your home.

Moving to a new home is an exciting transition, but that doesn’t make it less tense or challenging. You’ll be keen to take some steps, such as putting your furniture in its place and finding homes for your belongings, but before you get carried away with the fun aspects of moving home, you need to tick some essential boxes.
