Pool Care Basics: Cleaning a Pool

The first step in maintaining a swimming pool is to remove any debris that has accumulated on the surface. This is done with a skimmer, which is a net that is placed on the end of a long pole.

Skimmers are very effective at removing leaves, bugs, and other small debris from the surface of the water.

After removing the debris from the surface of the water, it is time to clean the bottom of the pool. Use a pool brush to do so. It’s a long-handled brush that scrubs the bottom and sides of the pool.

Next, it is time to sanitize the water. Do so using chlorine or bromine. Both are effective at killing bacteria and keeping the water clean and safe. There are several ways to add chlorine or bromine to the pool water, including tablets, liquid, and granular forms.

Once the water has been sanitized, it is time to balance the pH level. The pH level is important because it affects the ability of chlorine or bromine to kill bacteria. The ideal pH level for swimming pools is 7.2-7.8.

Lastly, it is essential to vacuum the pool on a regular basis. A manual or automatic vacuum can remove dirt, debris, and bacteria from the bottom of the pool.

How to Know When Pool Cleaning Is Needed

One of the easiest ways to tell if it’s time to clean your pool is to simply take a look at the water. If it’s starting to look murky or discolored, that’s a sign that it’s time for pool cleaning.

Another way to tell is by smell. If your pool water has a strong chlorine smell, that means there’s too much chlorine in the water, and it must be balanced.

So, how often should you be cleaning your pool? The frequency depends on a few factors, such as how much you use the pool and how many people use it. Generally speaking, though, you should aim to clean your pool at least once a week.
