Over three million Americans suffer a sports injury every year, which shows how common getting injured is.

Although there are thousands of ailments, common types of sports injuries repeatedly occur like shoulder or ankle strains. But there are lesser-known examples you may have overlooked. Perhaps you want to learn more about sports injuries and note the most common ones.

Sounds like you? Don’t worry, you’ve come to the right place. Here are the main types of sports injuries to know.

Strains

You’ll notice that in all types of sports, participants suffer from strains. This can occur in our hamstrings, pulled groin muscles, and even our quads. We experience pain because the tendons and muscles have overstretched, leaving them torn.

If you’re worried about this, always warm-up and stretch being playing sports as a preventative measure.

Tennis Elbow

One of the major bad sports injuries is tennis elbow, even though it doesn’t solely happen when playing tennis.

This problem occurs when you strain the elbow’s ligaments because of overuse or repetitive activity. Note, avoid this by slowing down and taking breaks between activities.

Back Injury

Spinal cord injuries can occur in many sports, often because of a jarring movement or impact on the discs.

If you suffer a spinal cord injury, it’s important to visit a chiropractor so they can suggest treatment and ensure it’s not life-altering damage. But you can prevent the risk of injury by keeping your back strong and partaking in low-impact activities.

ACL Tear

Suffering an ACL tear is one of the most severe sports injuries. Otherwise known as the anterior cruciate ligament, the ACL connects the leg bone to your knee.

It’s a common occurrence especially if you regularly skateboard, cycle, or do high-activity exercise. If you think you’ve got an ACL injury, see your doctor immediately.

Concussion

Concussions are a common occurrence in most professional sports, especially ball games.

This happens when there’s a significant hit to the head, and you may even lose consciousness. Aside from blacking out, you may feel dizzy, disorientated, and nauseous, so it’s important to seek medical attention.

Note, concussions take around two weeks to fully heal so you can resume your regular exercise regimen.

Shin Splints

Most runners are familiar with the infamous shin splints. Otherwise known as plantar fasciitis, this is where the tendon in the arch of the foot gets inflamed, making every step excruciating. It can also inflame muscles in the lower leg caused by the repeated impact of running.

But you can prevent this by stretching before running and resting between workouts.
