Chelsea completes the signing of Wesley Fofana on Wednesday for £75 million from Leicester City on a seven-year deal. The 21-year-old had been a long-term target for Chelsea this summer.
His signing makes him the second most expensive player in Leicester City history only Harry Maguire cost more than the French international. He is now the most expensive defender in Chelsea’s history.
Wesley Fofana joined Leicester City for £36 million from Saint-Étienne in 2020. Fofana made 54 appearances for Leicester scoring one goal in the process including 37 appearances in the Premier League.
He was part of the Leicester City team that defeated Chelsea in the finals of the FA Cup in 2021 and was named Leicester City’s young player of the year.
The French international has revealed that he is joining Chelsea to win more trophies especially the Premier League and the Champions.
What is Wesley Fofana’s ambition for joining Chelsea?
The French international told the Chelsea media after completing the move, saying: “I’m here to win trophies – the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, everything. I came here to win and the club is built to win trophies so I’m here to continue that.
“The two last days have been really big days for me and I’m very happy. I trained this morning with the team and it’s a dream for me. I’m very excited to start playing games for the fans and the club.
The 21- years- old added that he hopes to establish himself as one of the best defenders in the World by helping Chelsea win trophies.
“Of course, it can a lot because it’s such a big club. For me, I want to be a big player, the best, and that’s normal because I play for the best.
“I’m sure this club will help me do that because it’s one of the biggest clubs and winning trophies is in the DNA here. Now I just want to be a part of that.”
Wesley Fofana made only 12 appearances for Leicester City last because of injury.
Reflecting on his long-term injury last season, he said: “It was difficult because I love playing football, and seven months without playing is difficult, for the player and the man.
“I worked hard on the pitch and in the gym but my life was different in those months because football is everything to me.
“Now I’m more strong mentally and in my body so I feel good. It changed my personality but I’m better for it now.”
Fofana is also relishing the opportunity of playing and training with experienced and proven defenders like Thiago Silva, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Kalidou Koulibaly.
“It’s crazy for me because when I was younger I watched these guys on TV in the Champions League and the Premier League.
“I used to go to the stadium and watch Azpi in Marseille so it’s a dream for me now to play with him and with all the other guys.
“I’ve played as them on PlayStation and now I’m training with them so it’s unbelievable really.”
Fofana is expected to make his debut on Saturday against West Ham.
