Thiago Silva made his Chelsea debut on Tuesday night and looked imperious against an admittedly weak Barnsley team. Thrown into Premier League action tonight though, it was a different story.

He made a terrible error in the first half to allow West Brom to score, but after the game his manager Frank Lampard went out on a limb to defend him.

He said that his defender had barely put a foot wrong other than his mistake and reminded the assembled press that it was just a matter of time before he was settled in his new team. As Lampard says, Silva has won too much and achieved too much in the game to be criticised by anyone for a one-off error.
