Career
Vanessa James started skating with her sister after watching the 1998 Winter Olympics. She initially competed in the United States and represented the Washington Figure Skating Club. In 2005, James started representing Great Britain internationally. She became Britain’s first black figure skating champion after winning gold at the 2006 British Championships and silver in 2007.
She participated in the 2006 ISU Junior Grand Prix and the 2007 World Junior Championships for Britain. At the 2007 International Cup of Nice, she won bronze in her last singles skating event before switching to pair skating. She briefly partnered with Hamish Gaman before teaming up with Yannick Bonheur in December 2007 after a three-day tryout in Paris.
Making their international debut, James and Bonheur placed seventh at the 2008 Trophée Eric Bompard. France’s James and Bonheur placed 10th in the 2009 European Championships in Helsinki. In March, they finished 12th in the 2009 World Championships in Los Angeles, securing France a pairs’ event spot in the next Olympics. In April, they also competed in the 2009 World Team Trophy in Tokyo, Japan.
