Canadian fans booed the U.S. national anthem at multiple sporting events following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of tariffs on Canadian goods.
The booing occurred at National Hockey League games in Ottawa and Calgary and a National Basketball Association game in Toronto between the Toronto Raptors and the Los Angeles Clippers.
The booing lasted till the end of the anthem, almost frowning the entire song.
This reaction signifies the anger among Canadians over the steep tariffs imposed by Trump, which threaten to spark an unprecedented trade war between the two nations.
Some Canadians have pledged to buy local products and avoid American goods in response to the tariffs.
For instance, some have posted guides on social media about how to avoid American-made products, and a local grocery store in Toronto began labeling Canadian yogurt for shoppers.
Additionally, the Premier of British Columbia, David Eby, called on residents to stop buying liquor from U.S. “red” states and to remove American alcohol brands from government store shelves.
The tariffs, which include a 25% levy on Canadian and Mexican imports and a 10% tariff on goods from China, are set to take effect on Tuesday. In retaliation, Canada has announced plans to impose tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods, including vegetables, clothing, sports equipment, and perfume. I think that’s just fair. But who is likely to be affected by these tariffs? We will wait to see!
