Whether you’re required to attend a business meeting in another state and are flying there and back in under twenty-four hours, or else you’re planning the trip of a lifetime with your family to foreign climes, security regulations onboard an airplane remain the same.
Passenger and crew safety is, of course, of paramount importance on each and every flight, no matter the duration, and with this in mind, there are a number of dos and don’ts in terms of packing your suitcase, as outlined below.
Toiletries & Other Liquids
First and foremost, there’s a plethora of reasons why you may need or, indeed, want to bring liquids in your carry-on luggage, whether it’s prescription medication for a cough or cold, makeup, or vape liquid, and all such liquids are permitted, as long as they’re nonflammable and under 50ml.
In terms of the latter, even though you’re prohibited from smoking cigarettes or e-cigarettes onboard a plane in the US, as long as your e-liquid bottle is less than 50ml, it won’t be taken off you by border patrol.
Furthermore, as long as you have visited a reputable Vape shop and purchased a good quality vaping kit, you can also take your vape pen apart before you board the plane and then take it through with you onto the plane as well.
Food & Alcoholic Beverages
The FAA official regulations decree that you’re simply not allowed to consume any alcohol onboard, unless the drink has been purchased and served to you by the flight attendants.
However, any alcohol that’s been bought in the airport departure lounge, as long as it remains unopened and is less than five liters, can be kept safely in your carry-on bag for the duration of the flight.
Baby food is allowed onboard, as are the majority of other solid food items, providing they’re not confiscated at border patrol, which for most airlines, also includes homemade sandwiches and other foodstuffs prepared at home to eat during the flight.
Prohibited Items
As you would expect, there are also a number of entirely prohibited or at the very least, heavily restricted, items that you should avoid bringing with you on your trip entirely.
Such items include the following:
- Soil (unless you’re in possession of a rare permit)
- Counterfeit items, (such as a fake designer purse)
- Any merchandise purchased in either Iran or Cuba
- Drug paraphernalia (unless prescribed)
- Products made from dog or cat fur
- Absinthe (unless you have a permit)
Technology & Firearms
Finally, when it comes to your firearm, if you need to bring it with you on the plane, it needs to be unloaded, placed inside your check-in luggage and inside a hard-sided, locked container before being declared at customs.
Mobile phones, laptops, and tablets are permitted onboard, but they must be declared and separated from the rest of your baggage during screening, as is the case with memory banks, portable chargers, and other larger items of technology.
