If you have a cavity, it is critical to have your dentist restore your tooth. This is done by cleaning out the decayed area and then filling the hole in your tooth. Dental fillings restore an even surface to the affected tooth; they make it look natural and safe to perform actions like chewing.

When your dentist tells you that you have a cavity, you will likely be given some options regarding the types of dental fillings they can use. Here’s more about the types of materials used in dental fillings.

Silver Amalgam Fillings

One of the most popular types of fillings is silver amalgam fillings, which are composed of silver, copper, mercury, tin, and zinc. These fillings are durable and last a long time.

The material is quite malleable, making it easy for dentists to work with and it’s an affordable option if you’re on a budget. The downside of silver amalgam fillings is that they are not attractive. If you need a filling on a visible tooth, you might not want to choose this filling material.

Composite Fillings

Composite fillings are made from plastic and resin. It is a soft substance that is hardened by using a curing light and is placed inside your tooth. Composite fillings can be customized to match the color of your other teeth, making it ideal if you have a cavity on a visible tooth. These fillings aren’t as long-lasting, but they are a great option if you want to conceal your dental work.

Ceramic Fillings

Ceramic fillings are made with porcelain, which is very durable. They are also visually appealing since they are tooth-colored and resistant to stains and abrasions. They are a bit brittle, making them better for large cavities.

Glass Ionomer Fillings

With a mixture of glass and acrylic, glass ionomer fillings are another option that is typically used for filling children’s cavities. A great bonus of glass ionomer fillings is that they release fluoride into the affected tooth to keep it from experiencing further decay. These are weaker fillings, which may not be a problem in baby teeth. They also do not look as natural as composite fillings.

Gold Fillings

Gold fillings are not a common option, though your dentist may have it available. These fillings are the most expensive choice. They also take more than one visit to have them fitted correctly. On the plus side, gold is durable and won’t corrode. If you get gold fillings, they can last for over 20 years.

Which Type of Dental Filling Should You Choose for Your Cavities?

The type of filling you choose will depend on an array of factors. Your budget is a big consideration, but you will also need to consider where the cavity is located.

If the cavity is on one of the molars in the back, you may want to choose silver amalgam fillings. For small cavities on the front teeth, composite or ceramic fillings may be best. Ultimately, you should get advice from a dentist to decide which of these options you should choose.
