Lafayette will have been 267 years old today.

Lafayette, a French nobleman and military officer, was also born into a wealthy family in Chavaniac in the province of Auvergne in south-central France. Michel du Motier, a colonel in the French Army, was killed in battle when Lafayette was only two. His mother, Marie Louise Jolie de La Rivière, also came from a noble family. He was born on September 6, 1757.
Lafayette followed the family’s martial tradition and was commissioned an officer at age 13 with the rank of sous-lieutenant. He sailed to America in 1777 to join the fight against British rule. Lafayette quickly became a major general in the Continental Army under George Washington at age 19.
His leadership in battles like Brandywine and Rhode Island and his advocacy for French support were instrumental to the American victory in the Revolutionary War. After returning to France, he was appointed to the Assembly of Notables in 1787; Lafayette played a key role in the early stages of the French Revolution, advocating for a constitutional monarchy and human rights. Lafayette helped draft the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen in 1789 with Thomas Jefferson’s assistance, but as the revolution became more radical, he lost influence and was eventually imprisoned. After his release in 1797, he remained a respected figure, later becoming a champion of liberty in the July Revolution of 1830.
Lafayette married Adrienne de Noailles, a member of one of the most distinguished noble families in France, on April 11, 1774. The couple had four children: Henriette, Anastasie, Georges Washington (named after his close friend George Washington), and Virginie.
He received numerous honours, including American citizenship, and streets, cities, and monuments were named after him in both nations. The U.S. government awarded him an honorary citizenship in 2002. He died at the age of 76 on May 20, 1834.
