Darius Milhaud was a renowned French composer, conductor, and teacher. He was born on September 4, 1892, in Marseille, France, to Gabriel Milhaud, an almond exporter, and Sophie Allatini. His parents were of a Jewish family of provençal heritage.
He enrolled at the Paris Conservatoire, studying under renowned teachers like Charles-Marie Widor and Vincent d’Indy.
In 1925, Milhaud married Madeleine Milhaud, his cousin and actress. The couple had one son, Daniel Milhaud, born in 1930, who became a painter and sculptor.
Milhaud produced over 420 works in various genres as a composer. He was a member of Les Six, a group of composers regarded as one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century. His most notable works include “Le Boeuf sur le Toit” (The Ox on the Roof), “La Création du Monde” (The Creation of the World), and the opera Bolivar.
Milhaud’s music was influenced by his time in Brazil, where he served as a secretary to the French ambassador, poet and dramatist Paul Claudel, whom he collaborated with and created the ballets “L’Homme et son désir.”
With the rise of the Nazi regime in Europe, Milhaud, being of Jewish descent, was forced to flee France in 1940. He emigrated to the United States and accepted a teaching position at Mills College in Oakland, California. Milhaud became a teacher, mentoring a generation of American composers, including Dave Brubeck, Steve Reich, Burt Bacharach, Katharine Mulky Warne, and Regina Hansen Willman.
Milhaud received the Légion d’Honneur from the French government and was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He died on June 22, 1974, in Geneva, Switzerland, at the age of 81.

Lyons started his engineering career by apprenticing at Crossley Motors in Manchester, where he studied in technical school. After leaving Crossley Motors, he worked as a salesman at the Sunbeam dealers Brown and Mallalieu.
In 1922, at 21, Lyons co-founded the Swallow Sidecar Company with fellow motorcycle enthusiast William Walmsley. The company initially produced stylish motorcycle sidecars.
