Alan Ladd was a renowned American actor and film producer born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Ina Raleigh and Alan Ladd Sr on September 3, 1913. His father died of a heart attack when he was just four years old, and his mother moved the family to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, when their house was accidentally burnt by Alan while playing with the matches. His mother remarried Jim Beavers.

Ladd attended North Hollywood High School and was an active participant in sports and drama. He was a high school diving and swimming champion. He starred in several high school plays, including The Mikado as Ko-Ko.

An injury shattered Alan’s dream of competing in the 1932 Olympics. Following an excellent performance in the aquatic show Marinella in 1933, he was discovered by a talent scout and signed a seven-year contract with Universal Pictures, but he was dropped after six months because he was short.

After graduating High school, he worked at San Fernando Sun Valley Record as the newspaper’s advertising manager. He later sold cash registers and opened a hamburger stand called Tiny’s Patio. Ladd was offered a chance to work in the entertainment industry as a grip with Warner Brothers Pictures.

Alan was signed as a radio actor by station KFWB, where talent scout and former actress Sue Carol discovered him. She eventually signed him, and his role under Sue Carol was “Rulers of the Sea” in 1939. His breakthrough role was Raven in “This Gun for Hire” in 1942.
