Among the famous people born today, September 26, is Sir Barnes Wallis. Sir Barnes Wallis was a renowned English engineer and inventor famous for developing the bouncing bomb used during Operation Chastise by the Royal Air Force during the Second World War to attack the dams of the Ruhr Valley.
Born in Ripley, Derbyshire, England, to Charles George, a general practitioner and Edith Eyre on September 26, 1887. He attended Christ’s Hospital in Horsham and Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham Boys’ Grammar School. After graduating high school at 17, Barnes Wallis served as an engineering apprentice at Thames Engineering Works and J. Samuel White’s, the shipbuilders. Wills got a degree in marine engineering from the University of London via their external program.
In 1913, Barnes Wallis left J. Samuel White’s, the shipbuilders, to join Vickers as an aircraft designer. At Vickers, he worked on airships and later Aeroplan’s. In 1920, Wallis’s first airship designed by him, the R80, flew.
When the Second World War broke out in Europe, Wallis came up with the idea of developing a bomb that could destroy the enemy’s base and ability to wage war. He began exploring the idea of bombs that could destroy targets that were not easy to target by first developing the super bomb, which was far more than any bomber could carry.
The Royal Air Force successfully used the bouncing bomb to destroy the Möhne and Eder dams, damage German factories, and disrupt hydroelectric power.
Barnes married his cousin-in-law, Molly Bloxam, on April 23, 1925. They had four children: Barnes, Mary, Elisabeth, and Christopher. Wallis and Molly stayed married for 54 years until Barnes’s death on October 30, 1979, at age 92.
In 1968, Wallis was knighted. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and holds an Honorary Doctorate from Heriot-Watt University.
