Today is the birthday of one of the greatest ventriloquists of his generation, Ray Alan. He was also a writer and television performer known for his ventriloquism and for creating beloved characters such as Lord Charles, a monocle-wearing, aristocratic puppet.

Ray received his education at Morten Terrace School and began performing at 13 at the Hippodrome Theatre in Lewisham, where he worked as a call boy. He dropped out of school to pursue a career as a performer after he began performing at private events and functions.

Ray went on tour all over the World in cabaret, and performed with Laurel and Hardy. He first performed with his creation, Lord Charles, was at a charity event in Wormwood Scrubs Prison, London.

He made his television debut with Lord Charles on “The Good Old Days” in 1960 on the BBC Programme and later on a children’s Programme, Tich and Quackers with Tich. His creativity had no bonds as he created the Ali Cat, a puppet character for the HTV series Magic Circle (1977). Alan was also the presenter of the BBC show Ice Show for two years and later a presenter of Channel 4 on ventriloquism, called “A Gottle of Geer” in 1986.

He continued to perform throughout his seventies but stopped due to ill health. He made his last performance in November 2008 at a special charity concert in Bridlington by Greg Knight.

Ray married twice. First, he married Greta Motherwell in 1956, but they divorced in 1972. He married again to Jane Laycock in 1991, and they stayed together until his death in 2010.

Alan authored four novels: Death and Deception(2007), A Game of Murder (2008), A Fear of Vengeance (2010) and Retribution (2011). Alan died on 24 May 2010 from complications of pneumonia and pulmonary fibrosis at age 79.
