O. Henry will have been 162 years old today.

O. Henry

O. Henry was a renowned American short story writer known for his short stories, poetry, and nonfiction. He was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, United States on September 11, 1862. O. Henry’s stories are known for their wit, wordplay, and clever twist endings.

William Sydney Porter was born to Algernon Sidney Porter, a physician, and Mary Jane Virginia Swaim Porter, a homemaker. His mother passed away from tuberculosis when he was only three years old, and his grandmother and aunt raised him.

Porter left school at 15 and started working various jobs in Texas as a pharmacist, bank clerk, and ranch hand. He worked as a bank teller in Austin, Texas, but fled to  New Orleans and later to Honduras in 1896 after being accused of embezzlement. Upon returning to the U.S., When Henry learned that his wife was dying, he was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison. It was during his time in jail that he began writing short stories to support his daughter, Margreart, using the pseudonym O. Henry to hide his identity; his first published story was “Whistling Dick’s Christmas Stocking” (1899).

He was released from prison after serving three years because of good behaviour.

He published more than 300 short stories. Henry’s first collection was “Cabbages and Kings” (1904). The next collection, “The Four Million” (1906), included his well-known stories “The Skylight Room,””The Green Door,” and “The Gift of the Magi. “The Ransom of Red Chief” (1910) is the best-known of his works.

Some of its film adaptations are “Ruthless People” (1986) with Danny DeVito and Bette Midler, “The Ransom of Red Chief” (1998), “The Ransom of Red Chief” (1911) and “Business People” (1963) (aka “Business People”) starring Georgiy Vitsin and Yuriy Nikulin.

O. Henry married Athol Estes in 1887, and the couple had two children. Unfortunately, Athol suffered from tuberculosis and died in 1897. His second marriage to Sarah Lindsey Coleman in 1907 ended in separation after two years. He died in New York, New York, at the age of 47 of cirrhosis of the liver because of alcohol addiction.

Mungo Park

Mungo Park was a Scottish explorer born on September 11, 1771, in Foulshiels, Selkirkshire, Scotland. He is best known for his exploration of the Niger River in West Africa. His journeys, filled with adventure, contributed to geographical knowledge of Africa during the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Park was initially home-schooled before attending Selkirk Grammar School. At the age of 14, he served as an apprentice to Thomas Anderson, a surgeon in Selkirk; during his time as an apprentice to Thomas Anderson, he met his future wife, Allison, Anderson’s daughter. Mungo Park married Allison Anderson in 1799. Mugo pursued studies in medicine at the University of Edinburgh in 1788 and graduated in 1793.

After completing his medical studies, Park joined the African Association. On May 22, 1795, at 24, Park was selected for his first expedition to West Africa. His mission was to examine the course of the Niger River. Park and his company were attacked on the bank with bows and arrows and spears by local tribes near Bussa, sprang into the river and drowned. He was 35 years old at the time of his death.

Park travelled through modern-day Gambia, Senegal, and Mali. During his first expedition, he faced several challenges, including imprisonment, disease, and attacks from local tribes. Despite these dangers, Park managed to map much of the Niger River’s course. He returned to England in 1797, where he published the book, “Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa”, which became a bestseller.

In 1805, Park undertook a second expedition to the Niger River, this time under a larger and more ambitious mission from the British government. Unfortunately, this expedition ended in his death.

In his honour, the Royal Scottish Geographical Society awards the Mungo Park Medal yearly. In 1859, A life-size statue was erected to Park on the High Street in Selkirk.

Julie Covington is an English singer and actress. She is best known for portraying Eva Perón in the original studio recording of “Evita” and for her rendition of the hit song “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” Julie was born on September 11, 1946, in London, England, to Ernest Gladden and Elsie Gladden Moody.

She attended the girls’ grammar school Brondesbury and Kilburn High School in Kilburn, northwest London, and later studied at Homerton College, Cambridge. Julie was actively involved in drama and was active in school.

She sang and acted at two Edinburgh festivals and became the first person to win the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Best Actress Award. Julie started singing songs written by Pete Atkin and Clive James after joining the Footlights while still at teachers’ training college in Cambridge.

Covington signed a recording contract with Columbia Graphophone Co. Ltd. after she was invited to appear on David Frost’s television show in 1967. She was a cast member of the original London production of “Godspell” with David Essex, Jeremy Irons, and Marti Webb at The Roundhouse. This was followed by a role in the comedy film “The Adventures of Barry McKenzie.”

Julie appeared in several plays at the National and Royal Court Theatre. However, his role as Eva Perón in the original studio recording of “Evita“, composed by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, made her popular. She also starred in the musical drama ” Rock Follies.”

Her song “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina“  became a hit and reached No. 1 on the UK charts. Julie was back on the UK charts again with an excellent version of Alice Cooper’s “Only Women Bleed.”

Julie’s net worth is $2 million as of 2024. There are no public records of whether she is married or has children. In 1977, she won the British Record Industry Award for the British Breakthrough Act.

He is best known for such novels as Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley’s Lover. His other works include: The Plumed Serpent 1926 and The Escaped Cock 1929, later republished as The Man Who Died. His short stories “Odour of Chrysanthemums” and “The Rocking-Horse Winner” are highly regarded.

Lawrence’s writing career stretched from 1907 until he died of tuberculosis in Vence, France, on March 2, 1930. Though in feeble health, he continued writing rapidly until his death, turning out many poems, reviews, and essays during his last few months, including a robust defence against the censorship of his work. Influenced by the likes of Thomas Hardy, E. M. Forster, and Sigmund Freud, his writing often wore a philosophical bent with an incisive insight into human relationships.

He spent the later years of his life in the United States and is buried at the D. H. Lawrence Ranch in Taos, New Mexico. He was married to Frieda Lawrence from 1914 until his death. He is remembered for leaving behind a strong legacy that has placed him at the epicentre of modernist literature, as he usually explored passionate and complicated social issues.
