Initially, Adam wanted to be a minister, but he shifted his focus to law, studying under the mentorship of renowned lawyer James Putnam in 1756. He was called to the bar in 1759 after completing his A.M. from Harvard in 1758.

Adams married Abigail Smith in 1764, who was his political advisor. Abigail was an independent thinker who shared John’s passion for politics and human rights and her letters to him during his political career. The couple had six children, though their family faced many challenges, with only four surviving adulthood. Their son, John Quincy Adams, became the sixth President of the United States.

He signed the Alien and Sedition Acts, which resulted in an undeclared naval war with France.

Adam lost his reelection to his close friend and vice-president Thomas Jefferson in 1800. He retired to Quincy, Massachusetts, after losing the election. Adams died on July 4, 1826, at age 90, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, just hours after Thomas Jefferson.
