Among the famous people celebrating his birthday today, October 25, is Pablo Picasso. Pablo Picasso, the famous painter, printmaker, sculptor, ceramicist, and theatre designer, was born in Málaga, Spain, as the first child of Don José Ruiz y Blasco, a painter and a professor of art and María Picasso y López on October 25, 1881.
He was taught how to paint by his father. By the age of 13, Pablo had developed his skills in painting and arts, and his extraordinary qualities shocked his father. Picasso later attended Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid.
Pablo’s career in painting started in 1894. At the age of 14, he painted Portrait of Aunt Pepa. Some of his famous and notable works include La Vie (1903), The Old Guitarist (1903–1904), Family of Saltimbanques (1905), Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), Portrait of Daniel-Henry, Kahnweiler (1910), Three Musicians (1921), Girl before a Mirror (1932), Le Rêve (1932), Guernica (1937), The Weeping Woman (1937), Massacre in Korea (1951), and Three Women at the Spring.
Known for his innovation and talent, Pablo upgraded his style from the Blue Period to the Rose Period, the African-influenced Period, Cubism, and Realism and Surrealism. He was a key figure with a hand in every art movement of the 20th century.
Throughout his life, he was addicted to work, sex, and tobacco. He married twice to Jacqueline Roque and Olga Koklova. Still, he had four children with three different women: Paul Joseph Picasso with his first wife Olga Khokhlova, Maria de la Concepcion Picasso with Marie-Thérèse Walter, and Claude Pierre Pablo Picasso and Anne Paloma Picasso – with Françoise Gilot.

Georges Bizet will have been 186 years old today.

Alexandre César Léopold Bizet, also known as Georges Bizet, was born on October 25, 1838, in Paris, France. He was a French composer of the Romantic era, mainly known for his operas. Bizet tragically died at an extremely young age when his operatic career showed the most significant promise it would ever show. Despite this fact, his work Carmen, in particular, is one of the most popular and frequently performed operas in the repertoire. Bizet had little success before Carmen, with mixed reviews of his early works. His output for orchestra alone was small, and though he devoted eight years to the Roma Symphony, that work was overshadowed by its predecessor, the Symphony in C.
On October 9, 1848, just weeks before his tenth birthday, Bizet was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire. He immediately began to make a name for himself there when, six months later, he won first prize in Solfège. The music critic Harold C. Schonberg thought that if Bizet had not died so young, he probably would have changed the whole face of French opera. As it was, the verismo movement was taken up mainly by the Italians, particularly Puccini, who carried on where Bizet had left off.
In June 1871, Bizet was engaged as chorus master at the Opéra to begin work in October.
By November, however, the post was taken by Hector Salomon. Bizet’s health had been undermined by a recurring throat affliction and by heavy smoking, combined with the strains of extended work, including long hours preparing publishers’ transcriptions. He died at 36 on June 3, 1875, in Bougival, France. Bizet was survived by Jacques Bizet, his son, and his wife, Geneviève Halévy, whom he married in 1869 and through whom his memory lived on to ensure the survival of his legacy in the opera world.

Johann Strauss II will have been 199 years old today.

Johann Baptist Strauss II, popularly known as Johann Strauss II, was born in Neubau, Vienna, Austria, on October 25, 1825. A highly acclaimed composer, he is remembered chiefly as a waltz composer but also for his polkas and operettas, for which he had most of his influence in the world of music. He initially competed hard with his father, Johann Strauss I, in the prime periods of the revolutions 1848 in the Austrian Empire, where competition was fiercer between them.
Strauss hit it big in the United States in 1872 when he participated in the World’s Peace Jubilee and International Musical Festival in Boston, conducting a “Monster Concert” that featured over 1,000 performers playing his most famous waltz, The Blue Danube. However, he did have to face fierce competition from his fellow composers like Carl Michael Ziehrer and Émile Waldteufel, who were ruling the music world in Paris at the time.
Strauss was troubled with hypochondria and bronchial catarrh at different times of his life. In May 1899, he came down with a respiratory illness that developed into pleuropneumonia and caused his death on June 3, 1899, when he was 73, in Vienna. He is buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery. Strauss continues to live through his evergreen creations; he has been tagged as the “Waltz King”, whose music reverberates in every concert hall and celebration worldwide. Later, in 1862, he married the singer Henrietta Treffz, and upon her death in 1878, he married the actress Angelika Dittrich, intermeshing his life into the arts even more.
