Robert Seymour Bridges, known as Robert Bridges, was a prominent English poet and writer. He was born on October 23, 1844, in Walmer, United Kingdom. He was educated at Eton College and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, after which he studied medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London. Bridges was going to practice medicine till he was forty, after which he intended to dedicate his entire life to writing poetry. However, lung disease forced him to retire as a physician in 1885 to devote full time to his literary and poetic works.

Bridges published collections of his poems, which include October and Other Poems (1920), The Tapestry: Poems (1925), and The Testament of Beauty (1929). Sometimes, it would be neo-Miltonic; he also attempted verse drama, for example, Achilles in Scyros (1890) and Palacio (1890). Besides his poetry, Bridges wrote some prose works, such as Keats (1895) and The Spirit of Man (1916).

In 1913, Bridges was appointed Poet Laureate, becoming the only medical graduate to hold this prestigious position, serving till his death on April 21, 1930, at 85 in Boars Hill, United Kingdom.
