Today is the birthday of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature winner Doris Lessing. The famous British novelist was born on October 22, 1919
Kermanshah, Iran, to Captain Alfred Tayler and Emily Maude Tayler McVeagh.
His father lost a leg during the First World War. She grew up in Iran and the British colony of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Doris attended Dominican Convent High School, Roman Catholic Convent all-girls, and Girls High School. She dropped out of school at age 13, became self-educated until she was 15, and left home to work as a nursemaid.
At the age of 18, she relocated to Salisbury and was hired as a telephone operator. Her career as a writer started when she was 15 years old; at the time, Doris used to sell her short stories to magazines. In 19950, her first novel, The Grass Is Singing, was published.
Doris Lessing was credited with several notable works, including the Children of Violence series, The Golden Notebook, London Observed: Stories and Sketches, Briefing for a Descent into Hell, Memoirs of a Survivor, and The Good Terrorist.
Aside from winning the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature award, she also won the Somerset Maugham Award, Austrian State Prize for European Literature, WH Smith Literary Award, Grinzane Cavour Prize, James Tait Black Memorial Prize, David Cohen Prize, Premio Príncipe de Asturias, and Los Angeles Times Book Prize.
Doris married twice; her first marriage was in1940 to Frank Wisdom, whom she had two children: John and Jane), She married the second time to lawyer, political activist, and diplomat Gottfried Lessing in 1943. They divorced in 1949. Their union was blessed with one child: Peter.

A strict vegetarian, later known as vegan, Bernhardt only consumed cereals, fruits, nuts, and vegetables and excluded dairy products, eggs, and meat from her diet. She had one son, Maurice Bernhardt, and was married to Jacques Damala between 1882 and 1889. Bernhardt died on March 26, 1923, when she was 78 years old in the 17th arrondissement of Paris and is buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery.
