Described by many as the most glamorous screen idol of the 1940s, Rita Hayworth needs no introduction as he makes their way to the top of the list of famous people celebrating their birthday today.

Rita Hayworth, the famous actress, dancer, and pin-up girl, was born on October 17, 1918, as the eldest child of Eduardo Cansino and Volga Hayworth in New York City, United States. Her parents were dancers, and it is no coincidence that she grew up to become just an icon.

Her uncle Angel Cansino taught her dance at the Carnegie Hall complex. She appeared as one of Four Cansinos featured in The Greenwich Village Follies at the Winter Garden Theatre before her fifth birthday. At age eight, Riat appeared in La Fiesta, a short film for Warner Bros. Rita ended her education in the ninth grade at Hamilton High in Los Angeles and never graduated from High school.

At age 12, she partnered with her father to form an act called the Dancing Cansinos. At age 16, Rita played a minor role in the film Cruz Diablo (1934) and In Caliente (1935) the following year.

Following her performance with her Father at Foreign and the Caliente clubs, she was spotted by the head of the Fox Film Corporation, Winfield Sheehan, who was impressed with her talents and signed her under a six-month contract. Her early roles under Fox included Dante’s Inferno (1935), Under the Pampas Moon (1935),  an Argentinian girl, Paddy O’Day (1935) as a Russian dancer, and an Egyptian girl in Charlie Chan in Egypt (1935).

She was labelled the princess of Hollywood, and she appeared in several notables, including the film noir Gilda, Only Angels Have Wings, You Were Never Lovelier, Blood and Sand, Separate Tables, The Strawberry Blonde, The Lady from Shanghai, and You’ll Never Get Rich.

Rita was the top pin-up girl for military servicemen during the Second World War. Her marital life was glamorous as her career; she married five times, including marriage to Edward C. Judson, actor and director Orson Welles ​ , Prince Aly Khan, Amanassor of Pakistan ​, singer and songwriter Dick Haymes ​, producer and screenwriter James Hil. She had two children: Yasmin Aga Khan and Rebecca Welles.

Rita died at age 68 of Alzheimer’s disease on May 14, 1987, in New York City.

Today is the birthday of Peter Stringfellow. Peter Stringfellow was a renowned English businessman who owned several luxurious nightclubs.

Born Peter James Stringfellow on October 17, 1940 to James William Stringfellow, a steelworker and Elsie Bowers Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire, England.

He received his education at Pye Bank Church of England Primary School and later Burngreave Secondary School. Peter Stringfellow passed the Sheffield Central Technical College exam and left three years later at the age of 15 with a 4th-grade Technical Diploma.

Arthur began working at a Cinema at the age of 13. Right after graduating from high school, he was hired as an assistant tie salesman at Austin Reed. At age 16, Peter joined the Merchant Navy as an apprentice and worked there for two years.

After returning to Sheffield, Peter was convicted for selling stolen carpets while working at Dobson’s Furnishings Company. He was convicted and served two weeks in Armley Prison for that act.

After struggling to get a job because of serving two weeks in prison, he decided to start a business as a nightclub owner and opened the Black Cat Club at St Aidan’s Church Hall in Sheffield every Friday night.

His fortune turned when The Beatles performed on April 2, 1963. Because of the increased ticket demand, he had to rent a bigger venue, the Azena Ballroom in Sheffield. This huge success led to Stringfellow opening more nightclubs, including the Blue Moon at St. John’s Church Hall in Sheffield and King Mojo Club.

In 1970, Peter opened the first super club, Cinderella’s in Leeds, combining recorded music, live bands, and later Rockefellers. After selling Cinderella and   Rockefellers to Mecca, Peter and his brother, Geoffrey Stringfellow, his business partner, moved to Manchester and opened the Millionaire Club.

After operating the Millionaire Club to Granada Ltd, the family relocated to London and opened the Stringfellows Covent Garden, which became the number-one night club where personalities, international film stars, rock stars, paparazzi, models, and national newspaper journalists partied. He expanded internationally and opened Stringfellow’s New York, Maimi and Los Angeles.

Another achievement of Peter is turning the old cabaret club into the “World’s Greatest Disco” when he took over and named it Hippodrome. He also made television in Ready Steady Go!, House Party, and Top Gear.

He married three times. His first marriage to Norma Williams was in 1960, and the divorce was in 1965, and they had one child. In 1967, he married Coral Wright; they stayed married till 1989, the couple had one child. His final marriage was in 2009 to Bella Wright; they had two children.

He died on June 7, 2018, of terminal lung cancer at the age of 77.

Among the famous people born today is American playwright, essayist and screenwriter Arthur Miller. Arthur Miller’s contribution to 20th-century American theatre can not be undermined.

He was born in New York City on October 17, 1915, into a Jewish family of Polish-Jewish descent. Miller had a younger sister called Joan Copeland. His family was affected hugely by the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and relocated to Gravesend, Brooklyn; Arthur had to deliver bread every morning to help his family before going to school.

He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1932 and had to work for some time to raise money for her College tuition. After initially studying Journalism, Miller graduated with a bachelor of art degree in English from the University of Michigan. After school, he was employed as a psychiatric aide and copywriter and joined the faculty posts at the University of New Hampshire and New York University.

Arthur was exempted from military service during World War II because of an injury to his left kneecap during high school. He wrote his first play, “No Villain”, during his time at the University of Michigan. Miller produced his first play, The Man Who Had All the Luck, in 1944.

Some of Arthur Miller’s most notable masters piece include All My Sons (1947), Death of a Salesman (1949), The Crucible (1953), and A View from the Bridge (1955).

Miller’s first marriage was in 1940 to Mary Grace Slattery; the couple had two children, and they divorced on June 11, 1956. His second marriage was on June 29, 1956; they divorced on January 20, 1961, and married again for the third time to Inge Morath on February 17, 1962; they stayed married until her death on January 30, 2002. the couple had two children.

Arthur was well decorated with awards and honours, including a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the St. Louis Literary Award from the Saint Louis University Library Associates, the Jerusalem Prize, the Praemium Imperiale prize, the Lillian Gish Prize and the Prince of Asturias Award.

Arthur Miller died at age 89 from pneumonia, cancer, and a heart condition.

Robert Craig Knievel, Also known as Evel Knievel, was an American stunt performer who gained fame for motorcycle jumping. Knievel was born in Butte, Montana, on October 17, 1938, and performed over 75 ramp-to-ramp motorcycle jumps in a death-defying show. His first significant show was on January 3, 1966, at the National Date Festival in Indio, California, and right away put his name in the books of daredevil stunts.

Larger than life, Knievel’s persona extends from the stunt arena to cultural icon in several films, such as Evel Knievel, released in 1971, and I Am Evel Knievel, released in 2014. Also, his influence extends into the toy industry: between 1972 and 1977, Ideal Toy Company produced a line of Evel Knievel merchandise to capitalize on his fame. Knievel did not stop there but wanted even more money from his image. He insisted on being paid to promote motorcycle brands instead of just getting free bikes to jump with.

Apart from his professional life, other challenges beset Knievel. Diabetes and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis finally took his life on November 30, 2007, in Clearwater, Florida, at age 69. He is buried in Mountainview Cemetery in Butte, Montana.

He had been married twice, the first time to Linda Joan Bork, which lasted 38 years, giving them four children: Robbie, Kelly, Tracey, and Alicia. The legend continues as a source of inspiration for the latest generation of daredevils and motorbike enthusiasts alike. The heyday of Knievel as a trendsetter in stunt and entertainment activities continues to be high, with his bravery inspiring many people even today.
