Born in Dublin, Ireland, to Sir William Wilde and Jane, Lady Wilde, on October 16, 1854, Wilde gained fame for his notable works, including The Importance of Being Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray. His writing is characterized by epigrams and a keen observation of societal norms, reflecting his deep involvement in the Aesthetic and Decadent movements, which championed “art for art’s sake.”

Wilde’s life was as colourful as his literary creations but marred by scandal. In 1895, he was convicted of gross indecency for his homosexual relationships and was found to be one of the most notorious celebrity trials of that period. He was sentenced to two years, from May 25, 1895, until May 18, 1897. After his release, Wilde began to live in exile in France, where he continued writing but never regained his former social position.

He died in Paris, France, on November 30, 1900, because of meningitis, though the exact cause remains open to debate. He was first buried at Cimetière de Bagneux. Still, his remains were transferred to the Père Lachaise Cemetery, whose monumental tomb he commissioned from the famous sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein.

Michael Collins was also known as “The Big Fellow.” He was an Irish revolutionary leader, soldier, and politician who led the struggle for Irish independence in the early 20th century. He was born in County Cork, Ireland, on October 16, 1890. Relocating to London in 1906, Collins found employment as a Post Office Savings Bank clerk.

During the Irish War of Independence, Collins became the Irish Republican Army’s director of intelligence. In 1919, he was appointed Minister for Finance in the Ministry of Dáil Éireann. His strategic genius was paramount in organizing the insurgent campaign against British rule. Under the terms of the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921, which established the Irish Free State, Collins became commander-in-chief of the National Army and Chairman of the Provisional Government.

Unfortunately, life for Collins was short-lived: he was killed on August 22, 1922, in an ambush at Béal na Bláth, County Cork, at the centre of the Irish Civil War. He was a mere 31 years old when he died. His testament lingered on, however, nine years later, when the UK Parliament passed the Statute of Westminster, which immensely reduced British authority over the Free State.

Collins’ contribution to Irish history is forever immortalized in song, stage, and film, perhaps the most notable being “The Big Fellah,” sung by the Irish-American folk rock band Black 47 on their 1994 album Home of the Brave.
