Gorky became an orphan at 11 and was raised by his maternal grandmother. In 1880, at 12, he left home and traveled across the Russian Empire for five years in December 1887. During those years, Gorky worked in several jobs, including as a writer and journalist at provincial newspapers and Caucasian Railway workshops.

Gorky’s early life experiences profoundly influenced his writing. His debut literary work, “Makar Chudra” in 1892, began his illustrious career. Gorky’s literature was centered on human nature and societal injustices. His criticism of the regime resulted in his exile from Russia, and much of his life was spent in exile. He returned to Russia in 1932 and lived there till his death.
