Aside from being a prolific writer, Gorky was a political activist and social commentator. He was a member of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party. His criticism of the regime resulted in his exile from Russia, and much of his life was spent in exile. He returned to Russia in 1932 and lived there till his death.
