Florenz Ziegfeld, born Florenz Edward Ziegfeld Jr. on March 21, 1867, in Chicago, Illinois, was a pioneering American Broadway impresario and producer.
He shown interest in being an entertainer at a young age. To assist in the management and success of his father’s nightclub, Florenz hired and managed bodybuilder and showman Eugen Sandow.
Ziegfeld quickly rose to prominence as one of the most influential figures in the theatre world, known for his series of theatrical revues, including the Ziegfeld Follies (1907–1931). He also produced the musical Show Boat. These lavish productions featured stunning sets, elaborate costumes, and talented performers, earning Ziegfeld the nickname “glorifier of the American girl”.
His show Ziegfeld Follies starred numerous performers and entertainers, including Bert Williams, Ruth Etting, Nora Bayes, Ann Pennington, Marilyn Miller, W. C. Fields, Fanny Brice, Will Rogers, and Eddie Cantor.
Ziegeld financed and built The 1600-seat theater, the Ziegfeld Theatre, in 1927, which cost $2.5 million. In February 1927, Ziegeld opened The Ziegfeld Theatre with the production of Ri Rita, which ran for almost 500 performances. The show was later followed by the production of the musical Show Boat, a great hit with a run of 572 performances. The show, which concerned racial discrimination in the South during the late nineteenth century, was produced by Florenz, Urban, and composer Jerome Kern. He died at the age of 65 on July 22, 1932.
