He is famous for his pioneering work in the study of Mars and his controversial theories about the existence of canals on the Martian surface. He established the Lowell Observatory in Arizona, which was the genesis of the effort that led to the discovery of Pluto 14 years after his death. After reading Camille Flammarion’s La Planete Mars, he was determined to study Mars and astronomy full-time. From 1893 to 1894, he began his research in the winter and dedicated himself to the study of astronomy, founding the observatory that bears his name. Percival chose Flagstaff, Arizona Territory, as the home of his new observatory. In 1897, Percival was elected to the American Philosophical Society. He later received the Prix Jules Janssen from the French Astronomical Society in 1904.
He died at the age of 61 on November 12, 1916
